Desks & Sit Stand Adaptors
Not all members of staff wear the same size shoe, so why should they all fit the same height desk? A British standard height desk is 72.5cm (to fit through a door frame) and will generally suit persons between 165cm - 175cm in height. For anyone else, the height of the desk will need re-adjusting.
A low cost solution for a single user might be desk raisers, built to the optimum height - simple but effective ergonomics.
Another basic solution can be a mechanical sit stand adaptor, which sits on top of your existing static desk and allows you to stand whilst working.
A more advanced solution is to use a height adjustable desk, which thankfully, have become much more affordable. Great for hot-desking, wheelchair users or multiple user scenarios, they also offer the advantage of facilitating movement and variability in posture, to relieve existing back pain and prevent further episodes occurring. Some even come with electronic control buttons where you can preset your optimum seated and standing height positions, so it really is just a touch of a button to alternate between the two!
Sit Stand desks (where the user can easily alternate between seated & standing postures) are very popular in Scandanavia and can provide multiple health benefits, as an increasing number of research studies are reporting.
The key is regular movement between the two positions, minimising the time the body is static in either.
